Event Overview
ARMS is excited to host a two-day community-engaged mental health research symposium. The symposium, scheduled for May 1, 2024 (9am-4pm) and May 2, 2024 (9am-2:30pm), aims to bridge the gap between academia and community knowledge in mental health research. The event is a response to the emerging interest in combining social scientific methodologies with community-driven insights in mental health research. It aims to foster connections and exchange knowledge between students, academics, and community stakeholders. The symposium will feature presentations, workshops, and panels led by community mental health experts, graduate students, and interdisciplinary faculty, all dedicated to establishing effective, community-engaged research partnerships.

Student Poster Submissions
ARMS would also like to invite McMaster students to present their work on one of the symposium days. Students can submit their extended abstracts on mental health-related topics by April 5, 2024.

Art & Inquiry Soirée
A key feature of this symposium is the Art & Inquiry Soirée: Artistic Explorations of Mental Health hosted by CMHA Hamilton during the evening of May 1, 2024.
This exhibit aims to initiate discussions on mental health challenges and act as a powerful physical representation of an artist-centred self-discovery process. The goal is to reduce stigma associated with mental health issues and provide a channel where artists, photographers, and poets feel comfortable sharing personal struggles, which is an important first step towards improving mental wellness.
Registration for the Art & Inquiry Soirée is separate from the symposium day ticket and can be found at here!
Art Submissions
Hamilton community members and McMaster University students are invited to submit artistic work in the form of paintings, collage, photography, digital illustrations, or poetry, that reflect on your personal mental wellness journeys with a focus on healing through compassion. Selected artwork will be showcased at the Art & Inquiry Soirée at CMHA Hamilton on the evening of May 1, 2024 and will remain on display during CMHA Mental Health Week, May 6-10, 2024.
All submissions are due no later than 11:59pm on Friday, April 12th, 2024.
